Philadelphia Psych from the end of the summer of love
i have only ever heard those 50 seconds in that youtube clip
but i have played it so many times it may as well be a double album
hailing from northeast philadelphia, they played the legendary club “the second fret” and released a single record: a live recording from the Electric Factory
it seems their drummer is their historian… further reading here

it goes without saying—–hook us up with this record and we will be forever indebted

An exhibition opens today that gets the full Getting Ahead endorsement as it features the work of fellow Germantown resident/space traveler, Herman ‘Sun Ra’ Blount. If you are in Philly or pass through anytime before August check it out. The opening reception is free today (April 23rd) from 6-8pm and features DJ Hiding Place.
“Pathways to Unknown Worlds: Sun Ra, El Saturn & Chicago’s Afro-Futurist Underground, 1954-1968″ features work by and about Ra and is mostly centered around his time in Chicago. Manuscripts, paintings and drawings are among the ephemera featured. ICA and International House will feature some screenings later this summer as well. You should be seeing us there.

i overheard an old man in speedos asking the clerk at record store emitt rhodes. of course, all his records are out of print in the USA, but are still available for those that can afford the japanese imports*. getting a response in the negative, the gentleman took that opportunity to tell the clerk all about mister rhodes. naturally, i jotted the name down and dashed to the internet.
if i had to describe his sound, the first thing that comes to mind is American McCartney. And like Macca, Emitt played all the instruments on his records, engineering them in his home studio. but unlike macca, rhodes can’t seem to avoid sounding wistful, even on his upbeat tracks.
a sample for the uninitiated:
sadly, emitt watched his peers go on to make careers out of music. homeboy dennis wilson broke emitt’s guitar peddle before going on to have a fruitful career with the beach boys. though emitt managed to avoid a watery grave, his career sunk like the bearded wilson brother.
this is music for the end of summer. get started now!
* though his albums can be found on vinyl on eBay for around eight bucks
Sleepy and OK are back tonight. No themes or guests. Just the two of them laying it down. Tune in on G-Town Radio!
