OK and I just broadcast our podcast of ‘parent jams’ to celebrate his recent promotion to fatherhood. A welcome addition was way more OK on the mic! Fun show, podcast coming soon.

We opened up with Stark Reality, a late 60’s-early 70’s jazz-funk-punk treasure reissued on Getting Ahead fave,  Stones Throw Records. If you haven’t heard them, dig in. They covered some tunes from songwriter Hoagy Carmichael and wound up commissioned by Hoagy’s son to produce music for the children’s PBS television show, Hoagy Carmichael’s Music Shop. Got us thinking about doing a show exclusively of offbeat childrens music at some point in the future. In the meantime, here’s some footage from the show. Stay tuned for the podcast we just did about kids/parenthood….

Ripples

We had a great interview with Jeff Winner tonight. Thanks again to Jeff and everyone who tuned in. In case you missed out or want to listen again, we’ll have it up in the next day or two. In the meantime, here’s an early experimental film collaboration between Jim Henson and Raymond Scott. It features an architect and his search for inspiration. It was produced for ‘Expo 67′ in Montreal.

the evolution of a song over more than 150 years

Drowsy Sleeper

(traditional North Carolina)

Wake, O wake you drowsy sleeper
Wake, O wake, it is almost day
How can you sleep, you cruel creature
When you have stolen my heart away
Hush, hush, hush, don’t you wake my mother
No songs of love will she let me hear
If you sing songs, go court some other
And whisper lowly in my ear.
My father he lies in the next room, simple
A-taking of his natural rest
And in his hand he holds a weapon
He says he’ll kill the one that I love best
Come go with me, you will stop my pining
Sit you down by the side of me
And lay your loving arms around me
And say you’ll love no one but me
I’ll go with you to some lonesome valley
I’ll spend the rest of my days with you
Although my meat may be pretty berries
And the water that I drink be the morning dew
Pretty flowers were made to bloom, love,
Pretty stars were made to shine
And pretty girls were made for boys, love,
And maybe you were made to be mine.

Getting Ahead of Ourselves has been streaming twice a month since fall of ‘07 on G-Town Radio. The live shows from Maplewood Mall in Germantown are now on the 1st and 3rd of each month (formerly 2nd and 4th.) Although we’re still doing the show live twice a month, we’re also gonna put them up here as podcasts to take on the road with you or stream anytime. You can do this through a player or subscribe through iTunes. Hopefully you’ll still tune in to G-Town. It’s good to know you’re out there while we do our thing. Along with the regular shows, we’ll be presenting episodes ‘from the vaults’ that we’ve broadcast in the last year and a half. We’re giving it to you warts and all as we’ve figured this thing out.

Here’s one to combat the winter cold. It’s a show of summer jams we did in the midst of a nasty Philly heatwave. Lots of dub, jazz, hip-hop and bossa. A particular favorite is one near the end from Donald Byrd. You can subscribe via iTunes or stream it from the site. Enjoy and let us know what you think. Full playlist and embedded player after the jump……
